Homeowners Security Tips #4 – Getting a Dog for Security
When most people think of getting a dog for security, the first few breeds that come to mind are the large breed dogs like Dobermans, German Shepherds, Rottweilers and Pit Bulls. While they can be intimidating, most large breeds aren’t really known as “barkers.”
In an earlier Zimmer Insurance Homeowners Security Tips, we discussed the two things burglars value the most are time and quiet. A quiet dog will not deter entry and burglars, who may “case” a house before planning a burglary can make a plan for a big dog. They may even bring treats to make friends with the dog so they have a friend wagging its tail while the house is being robbed.
When buying a dog as a security dog to prevent burglaries, you may be better served with a “yappy” dog that make a lot of noise. Believe it or not, they are often a better deterrent than the big breeds.
